How to Catch Up at Summer School

By eHow Education Editor

Most of the time kids think of summer school as an imposition. It interrupts their summer vacation and requires them to do schoolwork while other children are enjoying the warm weather. However, summer school is a time to catch up on any work that may not have been completed during the regular school year and helps the student in the long term.

Step 1:
Speak to your child's guidance counselor or teachers. Before your child starts summer school, set up a time to meet with his teacher or guidance counselors. Discuss the reasons that he needs to attend summer school.

Step 2:
See how many courses the child needs to take to reach his current grade level.

Step 3:
Ask for a copy of the summer curriculum. Request a copy of the work to be covered in her summer school classes. This gives you an idea of what to expect in testing and homework.

Step 4:
Set aside time each night for the child to complete his homework and/or study. Since you want the child to pass and catch up with the rest of his classmates, it is important that you enforce study time each evening during the summer.

Step 5:
Get progress reports from the summer school teacher. To make sure that the student is keeping up with her work, talk to the teacher about getting periodic progress notes.
